Woman Claims Xarelto Caused Internal Hemorrhaging

In February 2016, a woman filed a complaint alleging that Bayer HealthCare and Johnson & Johnson’s blood thinner Xarelto caused her to suffer internal bleeding. In a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, Margaret Garvey claims that she took Xarelto for less than two weeks in May 2014, and subsequently developed bleeding around her heart and lungs. Moreover, Garvey claims that Xarelto’s manufacturers knew about the hemorrhaging risks associated with the anticoagulant, yet withheld information from the marketplace about the uncontrollable bleeding Xarelto patients may face with no known antidote.

This lawsuit is one of approximately 4,000 filed against Bayer HealthCare and Johnson & Johnson as part of a multidistrict litigation (“MDL”) in the Eastern District of Louisiana in December 2014.  Many of those plaintiffs are represented by Grant & Eisenhofer, involved in the Bellweather Selection Committee and co-leading the Law & Briefing Committee of the Xarelto MDL.
