Thousands Sue 3M for Hearing Loss Caused by Faulty Earplugs

According to a court documents issued on January 21, 2020, nearly 140,000 individuals in the United States have presented claims for hearing loss or tinnitus allegedly caused by 3M’s Combat Arms earplugs. Tens of thousands of additional complaints are predicted to be filed in the near future.

Many of the people affected are military veterans, as the devices were standard issue to all service members between 2003 and 2015. Each of the plaintiffs raise similar allegations, pointing to design defects that caused inadequate hearing protection. This resulted in permanent hearing loss and tinnitus for thousands of people.

To organize the plethora of 3M earplug hearing loss claims, a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) was established. Plaintiffs and defendants are now in a process to select cases for the bellwether trial.
