A series of lawsuit settlement conferences are scheduled to take place over the next 12 months related to the diabetes drug Actos. More than 4,000 cases pending in federal courts nationwide all similarly allege that the drugmaker Takeda Pharmaceuticals failed to sufficiently warn of the risks Actos carried in causing bladder cancer. Since 2011, many Actos complaints have been centralized before U.S. District Judge Rebecca F. Doherty in the Western District of Louisiana as part of a multi-district litigation, or MDL—a mechanism courts use to expedite and more efficiently coordinate legal proceedings of cases alleging similar claims. Five formal settlement meetings will be held between April 16, 2015 and March 18, 2016. The next bellwether trial is scheduled to commence in May 2016.
