Over a year after the October 2017 Tubbs Fire broke out in Calistoga, CA, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) has determined the cause of the fire to have been due to electrical equipment located on private property—and not equipment owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Co (PG&E). In stark contrast to the Tubbs investigation, fire investigators have determined that PG&E’s equipment indeed caused 17 of the other wildfires that occurred in Northern California that month.
As a result of Cal Fire’s culpability findings, PG&E’s estimated liabilities for the California wildfires have now been cut in half—meaning there are additional assets available to compensate those who were injured or suffered property damage in the November 2018 Camp Fire.
