Need for Xarelto Blood-Monitoring Undermines Need for Xarelto At All

A March 2015 study in the Journal of Cardiology determined that more than 20% of Xarelto users monitored were at high risk for bleeding, due to over-thinning of the blood. Researchers argue that if patients taking anticoagulant Xarelto were required to undergo the same blood testing as warfarin users, doctors may be better able to detect this symptom and alter the dosage of the drug, saving patients from serious bleeding events. An editorial published in The Journal of the American Medical Association in the same month also opines that the one-dose-for-all theory may not be the safest treatment option compared to more individualized and tailored prescription management. These new studies beg the question if Xarelto is truly safer and superior to warfarin, as its manufacturers indicate.
