Morcellator Use Still Covered by Health Care Services Corp.
Power morcellators, surgical devices used in hysterectomies to grind up and remove uterine fibroids, have been linked spreading unknown cancer in women. The tools have been banned from hospitals, declined for coverage by major healthcare providers such as Aetna, and advocated against by cancer survivors, but some health insurers—specifically the nation’s fourth-largest provider, Health Care Services Corp—will continue to cover the procedure despite the FDA’s warnings against its use. Though controversial, HCSC has said it plans to monitor health care industry dialogue regarding the issue.
