Hundreds of Juul Lawsuits Organized as Multi-District Litigation
With over 300 lawsuits filed against Juul Labs, a manufacturer of popular vaping products, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has centralized these cases into a multi-district litigation (MDL) in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. An MDL is a mechanism often used by the courts to coordinate multiple cases alleging similar claims under one umbrella to eliminate duplicative discovery efforts and get an idea of how a judge may rule on each case.
In the Juul MDL, the cases have been coordinated before U.S. District Judge William H. Orrick III. The plaintiffs similarly allege that Juul targeted young people in their marketing efforts, including minors, and failed to warn consumers that their vaping products contain nicotine. Juul is also accused of promoting its vaping products as healthier alternatives to cigarettes. Juul vape pen use, often called Juuling, has been linked to lung damage and death among young people. At the beginning of 2020, the FDA banned most flavored nicotine vaping products, as lung illness linked to vaping had so far taken the lives of 55 people across 27 states.
