GM Rejects Extension on Ignition Switch Claims Deadline
Despite requests from two U.S. senators, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Edward Markey of Massachusetts, General Motors has confirmed that that is does not plan to extend the already-once-extended January 31, 2015 deadline to file injury or death claims related to faulty ignition switches in 2.6 million of GM-manufactured vehicles. The senators pressured GM for the deadline extension in an attempt to enable the U.S. Department of Justice to complete its criminal investigation over GM’s conduct over the defective ignition switches. As of January 23, 2015, the compensation fund program set up by GM received over 3,000 claims, and of those, 50 fatal claims have been deemed qualified for compensation.
