Over the past three years, hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against Pfizer, maker of Zoloft, surrounding accusations that the antidepressant caused birth defects when used during pregnancy. The cases were recently centralized in an MDL (multi-district litigation, or a mechanism courts use to coordinate cases alleging similar claims) in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania with the first of the Zoloft trials to commence next spring. The March 2016 trial will be the first of the bellwether cases.
