Faulty DePuy Hip Implant Recipients Speaking Out at Australian Hearing

1,891 recipients of defective hip replacement systems are suing Johnson & Johnson and DePuy over their faulty ASR metal-on-metal hip implants after suffering constant pain and metal poisoning due to the device. They are accusing DePuy of improper clinical testing and withholding information on defects—problems known by the company since 2005, but not addressed until 2010. Counsel representing injured plaintiffs, John Sheahan, QC, said at the hearing that the devices had been “a failure, both clinically and commercially,” with a 39% removal rate.

Faulty metal-on-metal hip implants manufactured by a number of companies have been found to cause severe discomfort, soft tissue damage, and metallosis. Litigation against the medical device manufacturers is also proceeding in the U.S. and a number of settlements have already been reached.
