Empowered Morcellator Victims Fight Against Dangerous Device
Dr. Amy Reed and her husband, Dr. Hooman Noorchashm, have become some of the foremost advocates for banning power morcellators. Just eight days after undergoing a hysterectomy in which a power morcellator was used to break up uterine fibroids, Dr. Reed was diagnosed with stage 4 Leiomyosarcoma – resulting from the spread of unknown cancer in the fibroid tissue shredded by the morcellator. After six rounds of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries, Dr. Reed has overcome the cancer, but now hopes to achieve another victory: the ban of the cancer-spreading surgical tool. She and her husband have leveraged their medical backgrounds to become central figures in the fight for safe medical devices, including testifying before the FDA and creating petitions, which have been signed by tens of thousands of advocates.
