What is Elmiron?

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is a medication designed to alleviate a bladder condition known as interstitial cystitis (IC). This condition, more prevalent in women, causes bladder and pelvic pain. It also may cause a frequent urge to urinate.

Manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Elmiron was approved by the FDA in 1996 for the treatment of IC. However, long-term use of the drug has been linked to vision impairment and potentially permanent vision loss. Lawsuits have been filed by Elmiron patients concerning vision damage. Lawsuits also claim Janssen failed to warn patients of these risks.

What Are the Side-Effects of Elmiron?

Published in January 2020, a study found that about 25% of Elmiron patients with significant exposure to the drug show signs of retinal damage. A common injury related to Elmiron use is a degenerative eye disorder called “pigmentary maculopathy.” This condition affects the macula—the central portion of the retina, which senses light. People taking Elmiron may experience the following symptoms:

  • Blurry vision
  • Dimmed vision
  • Loss of close vision
  • Difficulty adapting from light to dark
  • Night blindness
  • Dark spots
  • Difficulty reading
  • Changes in eye color (pigment)

What Are the Elmiron Lawsuits Claiming?

People who took Elmiron and experienced vision problems have filed lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals. They allege that Janssen failed to warn the doctors and patients about the risks of vision problems associated with the drug. These risks include potentially developing serious eye and vision-related injuries.

Who Is Eligible to File a Lawsuit?

You may be legally entitled to compensation if you:

  • Took Elmiron for a prolonged period of time, and;
