Roblox Sexual Abuse Lawsuits: What Parents Should Know
Maker of the popular gaming platform Roblox is under fire with multiple lawsuits alleging failure to protect minors from online predators and sexual abuse.
Roblox is one of the world’s most popular online gaming platforms, allowing users to create virtual worlds, play interactive games, and communicate with others online—with tens of millions of kids using the platform to play video games each day. However, nationwide lawsuits point to concern for children’s online safety and highlight the responsibilities companies should have to protect young users.
What are the Roblox Sexual Assault Lawsuits About and What do the Complaints Allege?
Families are taking legal action across the country after multiple children have become targets for exploitation and online predators through Roblox’s messaging system. National safety groups are calling on federal regulators to step in after lawsuits claim that Roblox Corp. failed to implement safety features to protect minors who use the Roblox gaming platform. The absence of such features has allegedly led to incidents involving exploitation, explicit image sharing and even in-person sexual assault. The lack of protections and parental controls have put millions of minors at serious risk of emotional and physiological harm, lawsuits claim.
The lawsuits further allege that predators used Roblox’s communication systems to target minors, build trust, and move conversations to third-party platforms like Discord® and Snapchat®, where parental oversight is often even more limited. In the past several months, State Attorneys General and other municipalities have also filed suits against Roblox Corp., including Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Los Angeles County.
Do I Qualify to File a Roblox Lawsuit on Behalf of my Child?
Families may be eligible to pursue a Roblox lawsuit if a child aged 17 or younger allegedly met an abuser through the platform and experienced harm such as:
- in-person sexual abuse or attempted abuse
- sextortion (a form of blackmail involving coercion of sending explicit images online)
- grooming connected to the sending or receiving of explicit content
- severe emotional distress, including attempted self-harm allegedly linked to the abuse
Children engaging in inappropriate interactions on Roblox may also exhibit warning signs of emotional distress. These signs may include behavioral changes, increased secrecy, anxiety, depression, or withdrawal from family and friends.
What Happens After I File a Case?
If your child experienced harm allegedly connected to Roblox, your family may be eligible to pursue compensation for damages related to the abuse. This may include the costs of therapy, counseling, or other treatments related to the emotional distress and long-term impacts associated with the alleged harm.
