Lawsuits Grow Against Paraquat Herbicide Makers

After exposure to the chemical herbicide paraquat, farmers and agricultural workers may be at an increased risk for developing Parkinson’s disease. The central nervous system disorder is a serious and progressive condition, which can cause tremors, slow movement, and muscle stiffness. Many individuals that have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s after mixing, handling, or spraying paraquat-containing herbicides and pesticides have sued manufacturers for allegedly concealing safety risks.

Since 1962, paraquat has been used as an agricultural weed killer. Due to its dangerous health risks, many countries have banned the herbicide but it remains widely-used in the United States. Cases filed all over the country allege that companies such as Syngenta, Chevron, Growmark, and others knew of the risks paraquat posed to people that handle the chemical, but that they failed to warn users of the link to Parkinson’s disease.  Because of this, plaintiffs allege, their Parkinson’s diagnoses may have been avoided had the companies not withheld these risks.
