Antidepressants Taken with Xarelto Quadruples Bleeding Risks, New Research Says

New research published in the January 2015 issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology suggests that patients taking blood thinners like Xarelto along with some commonly prescribed antidepressants such as Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft may nearly quadruple their risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. The research, which included 22 studies involving more than 1 million patients, also found bleeding risks to be just as high among patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) like Motrin or Advil simultaneously with these antidepressants, known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. As reported in another study out of Denmark in November 2014, patients taking anticoagulants like Xarelto with NSAIDs carry a significant increased risk of severe bleeding.
